Media: | Thatching grass (indigenous South African grass used in the building of traditional African homes), wattle (exotic South African wood). |
This work was manufactured using a range of traditional Zulu grass weaving techniques that I learnt from master builders in the rural KwaZulu Natal highlands. The work makes strong references to landscape both in the physical and the historical sense. Part of the source of this work was derived from looking at ancient Egyptian sarcophagi as well as exotic central African coffins. I had imagined building myself a shroud that would plant me back into the African soil.
