Sleeping

Sleeping

Date: 1985
Dimensions: L1880mm x H1200mm x W700mm
Media: Thatching grass (indigenous South African grass used in the building of traditional African homes), wattle (exotic South African wood), mealie leaves (the leaves of a local South African corn), galvanised wire.

This work is made from traditional Zulu weaving skills that I learnt from traditional homebuilders in the highlands of KwaZulu Natal. This work celebrates a rediscovered notion of home and a sense of belonging to the African landscape. It is a metaphor that is created around my own bodily dimensions and imagines myself asleep in the land.
