Our homes synthesize land and landscape into an intimate symbol of ownership of the geographic and historical land. From this site (home) all our intimate values are projected on to the more complex political and cultural references that constitute our various identities. The post-apartheid, democratic South African landscape is in a process of degeneration, metamorphosis and regeneration. Seeking for and securing of new markers within a physical and emotional landscape results in new ordering and ownership principles. The human landscape remains marked and embedded with residues of history as well as becoming signifiers for new ambitions and hopes. The physical environment remains marked in an ugly yet familiar manner. It is this familiarity that embraces us in a familiar way.
